Consultant and Visiting Scientist (February - June) at the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in Rome, Italy.

Under the direct supervision of the Secretary, EuFMD Commission, AGAH, the consultant has worked directly with the EuFMD Secretariat and in close consultation with the other EuFMD Staff, Consultants and FAO Officers in Headquarters and the decentralised offices, assisting with Secretariat tasks and the fulfilment of EuFMD objectives.

Duties performed:

  • Assist the management of Component 2.3 of the Mediterranean Animal Health Network (REMESA) of the EuFMD Work programme.
  • Provided technical support to the work programme of the component 2.3 (REMESA), particularly to ensure the development of a Regional Risk Based Strategic Plan in North Africa and support with knowledge, experiences, expertise, the establishment of a regional vaccine-bank.
  • Supported other activities connected to the Component 2.3 (REMESA) with the aim of: a) supporting surveillance systems, b) building capacity in clinical recognition, c) supporting emergency preparedness.
  • Assist the development of activities included in Component 2.2 for the development of the National Risk Based Strategic Plan in Egypt and other countries.
  • Assist with the provision of EuFMD training courses and other workshops.

Workshops
- Participating in a workshop organized by Health Security Partners, USA, on Strengthening Health Security Systems in Libya, that was held in Tunis on 24-26 February 2019.

- Participating as Trainer in the workshop organized by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) subregional Office for North Africa with the title “Epidemio-surveillance of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, Rabies and Rift Valley Fever: Good Emergency Management Practices and Veterinary Communication” that was held on 28th January to the 1st of February 2019 in Tunis.

- Participating as Trainer in the workshop to Validate the National Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) Control and Eradication Strategy and Action Plan for Libya that was held on 28-30 August, 2018 in Tunis.

- Participating in the workshop with the title “Strengthening Enhancing Research for Africa Network (ERFAN) through the support of OIE Reference Laboratories/Collaboration Centres in the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) Region” that was held on the 3-4 May, 2018 in Tunis.

- Participating in the workshop with the title "Defining Requirements for International Field Trials for Conventional and Next-Generation Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) Vaccines and Diagnostics” that was held on the 10-12 June, 2014, at the Renaissance Washington, DC Dupont Circle Hotel, USA.  

- Organizing and participating in two workshops during January and March 2014, organised by European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EuFMD) in Tripoli to implement the Risk Based Strategic Plan to control FMD in Libya. 1st workshop in Tripoli, 26 - 30 January 2014 and the 2nd workshop in Tripoli, 23 - 27 March 2014.

- Organizing and participating in FMD Scientific Day in Tripoli in 30/3/2014, with participating of international FMD experts.

 Activities
- Head of a research team for a project with the title "Genetic authentication of bacterial isolates from meat and milk products in Libya and establishing the Food-borne Libyan-type Bacterial Collection (FLBC)". This project was supported by the Authority of Natural Science Research and Technology, Libya. The research was carried out at the Faculty of Veterinary Mdicine, University of Tripoli.
- Teaching Virology to the 3rd year students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tripoli.

- Teaching post-graduate courses to the post-graduate students at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tripoli.

- Carrying out some researches in the microbiological lab.

- As a committee member of the NCAH, with the director of the NCAH (CVO), were responsible of the animal health sector in Libya as well as the development and implementation of plans, programs and veterinary policies for Libya.

- Cooperation with Italy (IZSLER lab in Brescia) and with EuFMD (FAO) in Rome, Italy in order to control FMD in Libya.

- Participating in worshops and programmes that were held with the support of the FAO and OIE, for example:

  • Develop a strategy to combat foot-and-mouth disease (EU-FMD, FAO, OIE)
  • Train the trainer in the area of FMD control.
  • To develop a Risk Based Strategic Plan for FMD in Libya with the help and support from the EuFMD.
  • Development of the strategy for the NCAH (2014-2019) with the help for the OIE experts, Libyan CVO and NCAH committee members.
  • Improvement of veterinary laboratories in Libya.
